Venturing with the Vanguard: the Voices of Sarah Campbell and York (September 08, 2026)

Step into history through an evening of live Chautauqua performance and conversation. The Bismarck Historical Society is partnering with The Study and Bringing Humanities to Life at BSC under an ND250 grant to host a special event featuring nationally recognized living history scholars Joyce Jefferson and Marvin Jefferson, with guest moderator Dr. Larry Skogen. Scholars will be portraying two remarkable figures connected to the American West and the Northern Plains: Sarah Campbell and York.

Doors open at 6:00pm. Admission is free, but pre-registration at this link is encouraged.

Drought, Dust & Creativity - North Dakota's Art Scene During the Great Depression (October 14, 2026)

Join Susan Wefald as she officially launches her new book "Drought, Dust, & Creativity – North Dakota's Art Scene During the Great Depression." She will share findings and photos and discuss how creativity flourished in the 1930's around Bismarck-Mandan. New buildings featured unique art projects. Local WPA administrators encouraged live theater, original ceramics, a new guidebook for North Dakota, and the creation of delightful costume dolls. Exquisite Lakota bead and quill work was created.

The program is free and open to the general public. Refreshments will be served.
